Pietra Ligure is one of the most famous seaside resorts in western Liguria: first-time visitors often become loyal holidaymakers who return year after year.
It’s the ideal destination for a typical seaside holiday with all the comforts. The beaches are easily accessible, well-equipped with facilities, and backed by a pleasant seafront promenade lined with palm trees. The sea is clean and swimming here is suitable for children and inexperienced swimmers alike.
For those seeking sport and entertainment, there’s no shortage of opportunities: hiking, cycling, rock climbing… and bars and restaurants!
Perhaps less well-known outside Liguria is the charm of Pietra Ligure’s historic centre, divided into Borgo Vecchio (the medieval area) and Borgo Nuovo (Renaissance). Almost entirely pedestrianised, it’s characterised by 5 caruggi, the typical narrow alleyways of Ligurian villages, which extend north of the main square running parallel to one another.
There’s no shortage of curious attractions… in short, there’s much more beyond the beaches. But there’s nothing stopping you from spending your entire holiday lounging in the sun!
The Free Beach of Pietra Ligure1 is one of the most popular beaches on the Riviera di Ponente, highly valued for its width and the vast range of facilities that have earned it the Blue Flag award on multiple occasions.
It’s a fine sand and shingle shoreline along which free and equipped beaches alternate, washed by clear, azure waters; the seabed slopes gently, allowing you to swim and enjoy the beautiful sea in safety.
For those travelling with pets, there are a couple of dog-friendly beaches offering specific services for four-legged friends, including water bowls, a designated swimming area where dogs can also take a dip, and dedicated showers.
A beach not to be missed in the Pietra Ligure area is the enchanting Baia dei Saraceni2 at Varigotti: it’s just 10 km away and can be easily reached by taking the coastal road SS1.
Other seaside resorts easily reachable from Pietra Ligure include Loano, Diano Marina, Alassio and Laigueglia: you’ll find beautiful free and equipped beaches in each of them.
The attractions of Pietra Ligure offer a pleasant break from swimming and sunbathing. Here are the most interesting sights to see, including family-friendly attractions and activities for the more adventurous.
Considered one of the finest churches on the Riviera di Ponente, the Basilica of San Nicolò in Pietra Ligure is an elegant religious building in Romanesque-Composite style overlooking the main square of the town centre.
It was built to give thanks to St Nicholas of Bari for freeing the city from plague, but construction only began two centuries later and took a very long time.
The cream-coloured façade has a harmonious symmetrical layout featuring three large doorways and two bell towers. The interior is brimming with decorations and works of art that are neither excessive nor cloying; numerous reliquaries are preserved here, along with a crucifix that is carried in procession every year during the celebration on 8 July.
The imposing and austere Pietra Ligure Castle is an ancient building perched on a dramatic limestone rock behind the historic centre: the rock is called La Pietra, and the city takes its name from this.
The original nucleus was built in Roman times as a defensive fortress and enlarged between the 6th and 9th centuries. The castle took on its current appearance in the 16th century; once its defensive function became obsolete, it became a private residence.
Romanticism and quirks, technique and poetry await you in Pietra Ligure’s most original museum: the Tower Clock Museum.
Born from the idea of watchmaker Giovanni Bergallo and inaugurated in 1997, the museum is a bastion of horological technique and mechanics: a centuries-old craft of precision and meticulous attention to detail that seems irretrievably lost today. Fortunately, the love and dedication that master clockmakers devoted to marking time is brought back to life in the museum’s rooms.
On display you’ll find original antique clocks (dating from the 16th century onwards), clock faces, hands and other pieces recovered from bell towers and bell frames, donated by the Bergallo family, other private collectors, churches and institutions.
A much-visited attraction in the Pietra Ligure area is the Valdemino Caves, located in the municipality of Borgio Verezzi, just 3 km away.
When visiting these caves, you’ll be amazed by the variety of rock colours, which display different shades of yellow, white and red: thanks to the presence of various minerals, the Verezzi caves are among the most colourful caves in Italy open to the public.
They were discovered by chance by three local boys in 1933, but it was speleological guide Giovanni Dentella who began systematic exploration of the cave in 1951.
He designed the tourist route that was opened in 1970, which allows visitors to admire the beauty of this underground cavity without needing technical knowledge or equipment.
A name well-known to hikers visiting Liguria is Monte Carmo di Loano. This shouldn’t be confused with Monte Carmo of the Ligurian Apennines, which borders Liguria, Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna: in this case we’re talking about a mountain of the Ligurian Alps situated inland from Pietra Ligure, just 15 km from the historic centre.
At 1,389 metres high, it’s crossed by numerous trekking and mountain bike trails that are very popular with both locals and holidaymakers.
The finest views can be enjoyed from the Sanctuary of Saints Cosmo and Damian, from the hilltop overlooking the Church of San Martino, or from the Pian delle Bosse Refuge.
If you prefer the adrenaline rush of climbing to the relaxation of a stroll, then the Hundred Ropes Cliff is the Pietra Ligure attraction for you.
This name refers to 23 climbing routes along the Cava Vecchia cliff at Verezzi, sunny all year round (south-facing). In total they include 300 metres of equipped routes and the maximum height of the rock face is 25 metres.
