Liguria’s smallest municipality in the Savona province is Laigueglia, a charming seaside town on the Riviera di Ponente, nestled in a beautiful stretch of coastline between Capo Santa Croce and Capo Mele.

It combines the typical atmosphere of a traditional fishing village, with boat houses, fishing nets, and weathered faces of locals, alongside the vibrant energy of a beach resort with beach bars, rows of umbrellas and a lovely seafront promenade.

This is Liguria. Unsurprisingly, you don’t need to venture far from the clean sea and beach activities to find greenery and mountains: the historic centre is framed by a series of hills crisscrossed by numerous hiking trails and mountain bike routes, popular with both tourists seeking some fresh air exercise and serious athletes looking for thrilling challenges.

Laigueglia is therefore the perfect destination for anyone wanting an all-inclusive experience combining seaside relaxation, sports, romance, excellent food, entertainment, services and amenities. Everything is here, but without excess, neither in social scene nor at the opposite extreme of isolation.

What makes it even more appealing are the many events, including MTB races, the Percfest jazz festival and the historical re-enactment of the Saracen Landing.

Laigueglia’s Beaches

The Laigueglia beach1 is a sandy stretch that extends parallel to the historic centre for about three kilometres, allowing you to walk along the seafront all the way to the charming Capo Mele.

It’s a beach for everyone: couples, families, young people. The sand, silica-based, is soft and light-coloured; the seabed is shallow and slopes gently, making it safe for swimming and playing. There are play areas and facilities for children and young people, including entertainment, swimming lessons, kids’ clubs and beach volleyball courts.

Young visitors will find plenty of beach bars open in the evenings and a famous nightclub, whilst couples will love the romantic atmosphere created by the fishing boats on the beach.

The stretch between Laigueglia and Capo Mele is known as Bay of the Sun2 and is the ideal area for those wanting beautiful sea and convenience: you’ll find a long line of beach facilities characterised by excellent cleanliness and services. Those preferring free beach will find one near the railway station.

If you fancy exploring different beaches during your stay, you can head to nearby resorts such as Alassio and Diano Marina or venture further west towards Arma di Taggia, Sanremo and Bordighera.

Outdoor Activities

Laigueglia has long focused on active holidays and has developed a range of services for visitors who prefer walks and cycling in nature to sunbathing on the beach.

Boat trips

During your stay in Laigueglia, don’t miss a boat trip to Gallinara Island, an uninhabited islet in the crystal-clear waters near the nearby town of Albenga.

This is the most popular excursion departing from Laigueglia, but with more time you can also reach Varazze, Savona, Loano, Sanremo, Bordighera and Imperia by boat.

Walks and Trekking

The classic walk during a stay in Laigueglia takes you to Colla Micheri3, a hillside hamlet where Norwegian explorer and anthropologist Thor Eyerdal lived. You reach it via a mule track starting from via Monaco, near the centre (around 2 km from the seafront, one way).

The walk winds through greenery and offers splendid sea views along the way. At the top, head to the back of the hill and you’ll discover a small village nestled among olive groves and terraced cultivation.

Another easy walk is the seafront promenade Hour Grenzhausen which takes you from Laigueglia to Alassio. It runs parallel to the beach for about 2 km over flat terrain, making it suitable for everyone. Along the route you’ll find numerous benches for a rest and local bus stops: you can sit down or turn back whenever you wish.

Prefer a more complete activity? A source of civic pride is the Nordic Walking Laigueglia Park, a set of 6 trails varying in length from 2 to 10 km that wind through paths, mule tracks and the beach. Levels range from beginner to expert, but all routes are well-marked.

Cycling Routes

The hills behind the village are perfect for exploring by bike, and it’s no coincidence that mountain biking has a long tradition in Laigueglia.

More experienced riders can tackle the routes of two historic sporting races held in the area: the Laigueglia Mountain Bike Classic Trophy and the Cross Country Trophy.

The first starts from Punta Taquara and reaches Alassio in the Concezione area, covering a total of about 19 km; the level is difficult so it’s recommended only for experienced people in good physical condition. The second is shorter (about 9 km) but is also a high level: it starts in the Concezione area and ends in Alassio, on via Monaco.

Road bike enthusiasts will also find plenty to enjoy, with numerous routes of varying lengths to choose from. One standout? The Giro del Finalese, a 130 km loop starting from Laigueglia that takes you through the most beautiful coastal and mountain destinations of the Ponente Riviera.

There are also coastal cycle paths and other easy routes suitable for everyone to explore by city bike or e-bike. You’ll find numerous bike shops in the area offering rental services and happy to advise you on the route best suited to your level.

Places of Interest in Laigueglia

Laigueglia is a village to experience rather than visit: you won’t find museums and famous attractions, but the characteristic “budello” (historic centre) is a lovely place to wander without hurrying. Via Dante is the classic main street, with lots of shops and bars, but the pulsing life of the village lies hidden in the caruggi, the narrow alleyways typical of Liguria.

Church of San Matteo

4Piazza San Matteo, 1, 17053 Laigueglia SV, Italy

During your stroll through the centre, take a look at the beautiful Parish Church of San Matteo, in Baroque style. You’ll recognise it easily by its two twin bell towers with majolica-tiled domes that stand out against the sky and are visible from all over town. Inside, the church houses some paintings by Genoese artists from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Next to the church is the Oratory of Santa Maria Maddalena, built in the seventeenth century. Here too you can admire some valuable paintings.

Chapel of the Madonna of the Snow or of the Feathers

5Via Aurelia, 630, 17053 Laigueglia SV, Italy

Another church worth seeing is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Feathers, perched on a rocky outcrop at Capo Mele. It was built by the Catalan community that lived in Laigueglia in the seventeenth century.

Saracen Tower

617051 Andora, Province of Savona, Italy

Walking along the Laigueglia seafront, you’ll come across the Saracen Tower, also called the Bulwark or Eastern Bastion.

It’s a cylindrical defensive structure built in the second half of the seventeenth century to protect the town from pirate and Saracen attacks, similar to other towers you can see along the Ligurian coast.

Originally it was part of a military complex that included two other towers, the Giunchetto Tower and the Middle Tower: both were destroyed during the Napoleonic era to build a road and a palace.

The railway station is located near the entrance to the historic centre; it’s on the Genova-Ventimiglia railway line, served by frequent regional trains. Laigueglia can also be reached by bus from the main towns in the region.
