What is Bergeggi? A village, an island, a stretch of coastline, a marine park? It’s all of these!

The historic centre of this locality in the Riviera delle Palme, a section of the Riviera di Ponente in Liguria, sits 110 metres above sea level on the slopes of Monte Sant’Elena. From here, a lovely walk leads down to the coastal hamlet of Torre del Mare, which developed between the 1950s and 1960s as a seaside resort.

Emerging from the azure sea that bathes this stretch of coast is the island of Bergeggi, a rugged rocky outcrop of wild beauty that represents the most photographed attraction in the town. You can admire it from the mainland, or take an exciting boat trip, or if you’re a diver, plunge into its crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life.

Since 1985, the village, coast and island have formed part of a nature reserve to protect the area’s historical and landscape heritage. Very close to Savona and not too far from Genoa, Bergeggi offers the perfect blend of convenience and enchanting scenery.

Bergeggi’s Beaches

Three beaches run along Bergeggi’s coast in succession. From east to west, the first you’ll encounter is the Bergeggi Beach1, a mixed beach of sand and pebbles with free and equipped areas. Next comes the private beach Playa De Luna Beach Establishment2, with fine sand; the Lido delle Sirene3, with pebbles and dark shingle, is closed to the public.

The first two are easy to reach, the third less so as you need to descend a steep staircase, but this beach is equally beloved by locals and holidaymakers, perhaps because of its stunning views of Bergeggi island. The waters facing the island, part of a protected marine area, will delight diving and snorkelling enthusiasts.

If you fancy a change of scenery, you can easily venture out from Bergeggi to all the main seaside resorts along the Riviera di Ponente, where you’ll find other stunning beaches washed by crystal-clear waters.

What to See in Bergeggi

Bergeggi has no famous museums or monuments; the area’s attractions are its beaches and natural beauty.

Bergeggi Island

Bergeggi’s top attraction is the island of the same name (sometimes referred to as the Island of Sant’Eugenio) located approximately 200 metres from the town’s coast. It’s an imposing rocky limestone outcrop standing 53 metres high with steep cliffs, topped with dense vegetation. The contrast between the blue of the sea, the green of the trees and the dark grey of the rock is breathtaking.

Now completely uninhabited, Bergeggi island was a monastic settlement from the 6th century AD onwards. Some remains of the ancient monastic religious buildings survive, including two small chapels in Romanesque style, and a cylindrical tower with defensive functions.

Today it’s a private island open to visitors only during special events, but a boat trip will allow you to admire its wild beauty up close.

Marine Cave

SS 1, 11, 17028 Bergeggi SV, Italy

Along the coast around Bergeggi, characterised by headlands, high cliffs and inlets, numerous sea caves open up.

The most famous is simply called Bergeggi Marine Cave and is one of the most visited caves in all of Liguria, despite being accessible only as part of guided visits organised by the municipality; the visit schedule is available on the official website.

According to local legend, Bergeggi cave was inhabited since ancient times by a dragon worshipped by the population of the nearby Roman city of Vada Sabatia; in the 5th century AD, Saints Eugenio and Vindemiali defeated the dragon using only the sign of the cross as a weapon, and the beast drowned. Archaeological studies reveal instead that the cave was frequented by humans, for residential or burial purposes, since prehistoric times.

A curious detail: until the 1960s, a geyser created by the wave motion emerged from the cave, but the outlet hole was sealed during expansion works on the Via Aurelia.

Nearby lies another interesting cavity known as the Railway Gallery Cave, so named because it was discovered by chance during excavation work for the railway.

Church of San Martino di Tours

Via S. Caterina, 1, 17028 Bergeggi SV, Italy

Bergeggi’s finest church is dedicated to San Martino di Tours, one of the early non-martyr saints of the Catholic Church.

Built in the 16th century and completely renovated two centuries later, the Church of San Martino di Tours contains some valuable works of art, including a 18th-century Crucifix and a panel depicting the Madonna of the Rosary from the 16th century.

Tourist accommodation in Bergeggi reflects the town’s dual character. Hotels and apartments are concentrated in the coastal hamlet and cater to those who want mainly beach tourism.

In the centre and surrounding hills, you’ll find bed and breakfasts and homes nestled in greenery, suitable for those seeking more peace and relaxation and willing to drive or take a long walk to reach the beach.

There are options at various price points, but the choice is somewhat limited, so it’s advisable to book well in advance. Alternatively, you can move to nearby towns, including Savona.
