Liguria’s wonderful climate is one of the region’s greatest assets… and also one of the most widespread myths!
It’s true that Liguria enjoys a Mediterranean climate, quite different from neighbouring regions in the Po Valley: winters are mild and summers warm but not scorching. In summer, the heat—rather humid along the coast—is tempered by sea breezes and average temperatures hover around 30°C. However, this only applies to coastal areas, which are the most visited.
Liguria’s climate is indeed shaped by the region’s varied topography, with sometimes significant differences between one area and another. You could therefore describe the climate as warm temperate along the coast, sub-coastal temperate in the band between the hinterland and mountains, and sub-continental with very harsh winters in the higher mountain ranges.
Rainfall also varies considerably depending on the area: snow is extremely rare on the coast, as are summer showers, whilst the higher elevations experience abundant precipitation.
That said, it can be said that in certain areas, particularly the Riviera di Ponente, you can enjoy temperatures similar to southern Italy all year round, and the Ligurian sea is surprisingly warm for its latitude.
Watch out for winds, particularly the tramontana, as they can cause sudden temperature fluctuations.
Below are the weather forecasts for the next days for the main tourist destinations.
